Get Behind the Wheel in the Sonoran Desert — No Experience
You do not need to own an off-road vehicle. You do not need prior experience. What you need is a weekday morning, a willingness to get a little dusty, and forty minutes of driving north from Phoenix. Time to Ride AZ in Cave Creek will handle everything else, and two hours into Tonto National Forest you will understand exactly why people keep coming back.
Why This Is Worth Your Tuesday
Golf is fine. This is different. A self-guided UTV puts you inside the Sonoran Desert in a way that a car window never will. You feel the temperature drop as you dip into a shaded wash. You smell the creosote. The light on the saguaros at 8am is the kind of thing that makes you stop the vehicle and just sit for a minute.
And because you are doing this on a Tuesday or Wednesday rather than a Saturday, the trails are yours. Fall and winter weekends are the busy season out here. A weekday in almost any month means you set your own pace, stop where you want, and never feel like you are waiting in line for the desert.
What Time to Ride AZ Actually Offers
Time to Ride AZ operates out of 7171 E Cave Creek Road, Suite J, directly on Cave Creek Road. Their rental fleet includes 2-seat, 4-seat, and 5-seat UTVs along with single-rider ATVs. Current models include the 2025 Polaris RZR XP 1000, the Can-Am Maverick R, and the Can-Am X3 Turbo. Half-day rentals run three to four hours. Full-day rentals are also available.
This is a self-guided operation, which is actually the point. No guide setting a pace that is too fast or too slow. You receive a trail map, a thorough orientation on your specific vehicle, and a phone number to call if anything comes up. The trails connect directly to Tonto National Forest from the parking lot, so you are riding within minutes of arrival.
For booking, visit timetorideaz.com or call (480) 597-7559. Reservations are strongly recommended. Bring a valid driver’s license for every person who plans to drive, and plan for a security deposit at check-in.
UTV or ATV — Which One Is Right for You
The short version: if you are riding with another person or a group, take the UTV. If you are solo and want the most physical, engaged experience on the trail, the ATV is worth considering.
A UTV is a side-by-side machine with a steering wheel, seatbelts, and a roll cage. It handles like a very capable vehicle rather than a motorcycle. First-timers adapt to it quickly after orientation, and the added stability makes it the natural starting point for anyone who has never been off-road before. Two-seat options are ideal for couples. Four- and five-seat models keep groups together in one vehicle.
An ATV is a single-rider quad you straddle like a motorcycle. It requires more active body positioning and feels rawer and more immediate than a UTV. It is not difficult, but it rewards riders who have some comfort on two-wheeled vehicles or prior off-road experience. If you are genuinely uncertain, Time to Ride’s staff talks through this every day and will point you toward the right machine.
For a first trip, the UTV is almost always the better choice. The shared experience is part of what makes it memorable.
If You Do One Thing
Book the 7:30am half-day UTV rental at Time to Ride AZ and take it into Tonto National Forest.
The early slot is the right call in every season — cool air, golden light on the saguaros, and trails that are yours alone. You will feel the temperature shift as you drop into a wash, smell the desert after rain if the monsoon has been through, and cover real ground without a guide setting your pace. No prior experience required, and the orientation before you leave the lot is thorough enough that first-timers feel ready within minutes.
When to Go — Heat, Seasons, and the Early Morning Rule
Cave Creek sits at roughly 2,000 feet of elevation, which takes the edge off compared to central Phoenix but does not eliminate the heat. From June through August, the only sensible plan is the earliest available time slot. Time to Ride’s 7:30am start gets you on the trail while the air is still manageable and has you back at the shop by mid-morning, well before temperatures peak.
October through April is the sweet season. Morning air in the low elevation desert can be genuinely cool, especially at the 7:30am slot, so bring a light layer you can shed once you are moving. Spring brings wildflower blooms and cooler temperatures. Fall offers the best combination of comfortable riding and dramatic light.
Monsoon season, roughly mid-June through September, adds its own character. After a storm, the desert smells extraordinary, washes carry actual water, and the visual contrast between wet desert and desert sky is something worth seeing. Call ahead after any significant overnight rain to confirm trail conditions. In many cases the trails are rideable by morning and occasionally better for it.
A weekday morning in any season is the right answer. Avoid weekend slots during October through April if crowds bother you. They will.
What to Wear and Bring
Helmets are provided. Everything else is on you.
Long pants protect your legs from trail brush and provide a little sun coverage. A lightweight, moisture-wicking long-sleeve shirt works better than a t-shirt for the same reason. Closed-toe shoes are required, so leave sandals in the car. Mesh athletic shoes are better than heavy boots in summer. Sunglasses are essential.
Bring more water than you think you need. Time to Ride provides water with every rental, but bring your own bottle or hydration pack in addition. In summer, electrolyte packets are a genuinely good idea. Dehydration in dry desert heat moves faster than most people expect, even when you are sitting in a vehicle. Apply sunscreen before you leave the house. The open cockpit of a UTV means your arms, neck, and the backs of your hands get sustained direct sun.
In cooler months, the 7:30am start can be chilly. A light jacket you can tie around your waist handles this easily.
How It Works When You Arrive
Check-in is at the Cave Creek Road shop. You will watch a short safety briefing video, then receive a hands-on walk-through of your specific vehicle covering controls, throttle, braking, and terrain handling. The staff will go over the trail map with you and discuss route options based on your group’s comfort level.
First-time riders are pointed toward routes that build confidence before they push further. Trails range from smooth desert paths to sections with washes, rocky terrain, and elevation changes. You pick the route that fits your group.
The team is reachable by phone throughout your rental. Complimentary roadside assistance is included. When your time is up, you return to the shop, the vehicle is checked in, and the security deposit is processed.
Build Your Trip
HALF DAY
Book the 7:30am slot at Time to Ride AZ. Arrive a few minutes early for check-in and the vehicle orientation. You will be on the trail by 8am and back at the shop by 11am or so, which means the best of the morning is yours and the heat has not arrived yet. Stop in Cave Creek for a late breakfast or early lunch before heading home. Harold’s Cave Creek Corral fits the mood exactly after a desert ride.
FULL DAY
Start with the 7:30am UTV rental. After you return, clean up and walk Cave Creek Road. The stretch around Frontier Town is worth an hour on foot — galleries, leather goods, turquoise jewelry, and Western wear that is the real version, not the souvenir version. Lunch at Harold’s or grab a patio table at Tonto Bar and Grill for views of Black Mountain. In the afternoon, if anyone in your group wants to stretch their legs on a proper trail, Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area runs along Cave Creek’s riparian corridor with cottonwood trees, seasonal running water, and a trail system that is moderate and well-maintained. End the day at Black Mountain Brewing Company or the Cave Creek Smokehouse.
WEEKEND
Arrive Saturday morning for the 7:30am UTV rental. Spend the afternoon on Cave Creek Road and at Spur Cross Ranch if your group hikes. Saturday evening, catch sunset from any elevated spot along the road and have dinner at Black Mountain Brewing Company. Stay at Prickly Pear Inn, which puts you close to everything and has ice cream next door if the day calls for it. Sunday morning, consider a second rental — a lot of repeat visitors upgrade to a Can-Am Maverick R or a five-seat RZR on their second trip and find it was worth doing sooner. You are back in Phoenix before lunch.
