Fall and winter are the strongest seasons for this trip. Summer works, but the open-air sections lose their appeal in triple-digit heat, and you will spend more time in the climate-controlled cars. Morning departures are the right call regardless of season – light in the canyon is better, and the day stays ahead of you. On a weekday morning, the train runs with noticeably fewer passengers than on weekends, and the experience feels more relaxed throughout.

The depot is in Clarkdale, roughly two hours from Phoenix and about 20 minutes from Sedona. Parking at the depot is straightforward and free.
